Welcome to Flacius.net PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the web site dedicated to Matthias Flacius (Francovich) Illyricus / Matija (Franković) Vlačić Ilirik, one of the outstanding European thinkers of the 16th century. He was a multi-talented philologist, theologian, historian, academic, and according to some, the founder of Biblical hermeneutics.

These pages wish to introduce Matthias Flacius and his works to the general public, giving him recognition for his accomplishments, and encouraging further research about him.

Accordingly, this web site is the first step in the process and it will be expanded and updated on a regular basis. It also serves as one of many planned activities and events which all have one common goal: to lead up to the festive commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Flacius’ birth in the year 2020.

This project was initiated by the National Museum in Labin and was financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the Division for Culture of Istria County, the Town of Labin, the Municipalities of Kršan and Sveta Nedelja, and by the Thermoelectric Power Station in Plomin. The National and University Library in Zagreb, the Library of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Zagreb, and the University Library in Pula provided professional support for the project.
